Phd Position in the Department of Molecular Biotechnology, Ghent University, Belgium

University of Ghent offers PhD position in the department of Molecular Biotechnology, Belgium

Study Subject: Molecular epidemiology of Chlamydopila (Chlamydia) psittaci infections in humans and development of a recombinant C. psittaci vaccine for chickens
Employer: Ghent University
Level: PhD

The research will be conducted in the Laboratory for Immunology and Animal Cell Biotechnology of Ghent University, Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, Coupure links, 653, 9000 Ghent, Belgium.

Research summary:
Human psittacosis (parrot fever) is a zoonotic infectious disease, which is caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium Chlamydophila (Chlamydia) psittaci. Transmission of the disease from birds to humans usually originates from close contact with infected birds, most frequently in the context of the poultry industry. The infection is highly prevalent in turkeys and ducks. But, recently we demonstrated that C. psittaci is also widely spread in the chickens. The purpose of the research is to examine the transmission of C. psittaci from infected chickens to humans (co-operation with Ghent University hospital). In addition, we are going to develop a recombinant C. psittaci vaccine for chickens, as vaccination chickens would also reduce the risk of zoonotic C. psittaci transmission to humans.

PhD Studentship at The Bloomsbury Colleges,University of London, UK

PhD Studentship at The Bloomsbury Colleges,University of London, UK

2011-Doctorate Studentship for the student pursuing Anthropology at Bloomsbury College University of London in UK

Study Subject: Cross-Cultural Study Of Apprenticeship And Skilled Work
Employer: University of London
Level: PhD

The project will develop an interdisciplinary approach to the study of apprenticeship and skilled work by capitalising upon anthropology’s fieldwork tradition and focus on social interaction, and the expertise of educational studies in vocational learning. As a model of learning, apprenticeship has been resilient over many centuries throughout the world, providing the framework for teaching and learning in occupations spanning traditional crafts and trades and occupations in journalism, medicine and law. In their seminal book, Situated Learning (1991), cultural anthropologists Lave and Wenger employed case studies of apprenticeship to argue that people learn through purposeful participation in ‘communities of practice’. Their deliberate focus on apprenticeship legitimises forms of learning and knowledge that lay outside formal educational institutions, and celebrate ‘skilled’ work as a practice which combines different types of knowledge (codified, tacit, personal), judgment, and creativity.

The minimum entrance requirement for research degree at SOAS is a UK Masters degree or equivalent recognised by the School. Candidates should have an undergraduate and/or master level degree in Anthropology, with a merit or equivalent in theMasters Degree and a MA dissertation grade of 65% or higher. Existing fieldwork experience and knowledge of the literature on apprenticeship, vocational learning, craft and work would be beneficial.
The successful candidate will engage in an uninterrupted period of intensive fieldwork in Africa or Asia to gather original ethnographic data in occupational communities of practice. They will also actively engage with Marchand and Unwin in a unique cross-cultural comparative study that synthesises the multi-sited work of all three researchers.

Candidates should have an undergraduate and/or master level degree in Anthropology, with a merit or equivalent in the Masters Degree and a MA dissertation grade of 65% or higher.

2011 CFP Journal Fellowships in History of Communism in Europe, USA

2011 CFP Journal Fellowships in History of Communism in Europe, USA

The Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies Announce CFP Journal Fellowships in History of Communism in Europe, USA

Study Subject: History of Communism in Europe
Employer: The Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian
Level: Postdoctoral

The forthcoming issue of History of Communism in Europe will focus on the Avatars of Intellectuals under Communism. The very relationship between intellectuals and the totalitarian State is of outstanding importance for anyone willing to understand the fate of academia and culture under Communism. The circulation of ideas in the public space and its subsequent shaping of the political and social bodies depended upon the aforementioned interaction. The Communist states witnessed very diverse reactions towards the ideological monopoly of the Party: outspoken resistance, quiet refusal, forced exile, passive collaboration, vocal support, and many other intermediary approaches. The next issue of the HCE welcomes original contributions on this topic. Ideally, the authors should address the role of the intelligentsia from a comparative viewpoint. The editors encourage young scholars, in particular, to assess the recent historical, cultural, and political findings within the former Soviet Bloc: Romania, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Poland, former GDR or various states of the former USSR or Yugoslavia. Equally, we welcome any contribution that describes the attitude of Western intelligentsia towards the birth, the growth, and the historical decay of the Communist utopia.
Senior scholars, researchers and PhD students are invited to submit their proposals on one of the following topics: Intellectuals and the Communist Party: doctrinaires, utopian revolutionaries, critiques, and dissident thinkers. Dissidence vs. collaboration. Case-studies and overarching narratives about the relationship between intellectuals and the Party nomenclatura and the Secret Police. In particular, we welcome discussions prompted by the recent archival revelations (responses formulated under pressure in terms of personal voice, voluntary betrayal, blind loyalty, etc) Eastern European intellectuals and the civil society. How was the 1989 event prefigured by the cultural circles of Poland, Hungary, Russia, and Czech Republic? Which were the first nuclei of civil society under communism and how did the Eastern European intellectuals coined the concept of civil society along their pursuits of an alternative political praxis? The alternative culture vs. official culture under Communism (this may also include reference to recordings and archival documents about the activities of various literary and artistic bodies).
