Near East Archaeology is part of the Faculty of Archaeology and has a long and rich tradition at Leiden University. Staff members are responsible for teaching Near Eastern Archaeology on all graduate and undergraduate levels. Recently a European Research Council Grant award for the project “ Consolidating Empire:Reconstructing Hegemonic Practices of the Middle Assyrian Empire at the Late Bronze Age Fortified Estate of Tell Sabi Abyad, Syria, ca. 1230 – 1180 BC” was awarded. The project focusses on the archaeological investigation of the early Assyrian Empire, using the Late Bronze Age data from Tell Sabi Abyad, Syria, and the prime case study.

At least 15 Undergraduate Science Research Scholarship Awards will be made in 2012. Each award is up to a maximum of $30,000 that consists of a scholarship award of up to $25,000 and a summer research internship stipend of at least $5,000. For administrative purposes, the scholarship portion of the awards will be sent directly to the institutions of the award recipients. As the scholarship award is intended to support the award recipient’s tuition, room and board, and billable fees, no part of the award may be used for indirect costs. Awards are not transferable and may not be used at institutions abroad. Awards will be distributed for a September 1, 2012 start date.

Near East Archaeology is part of the Faculty of Archaeology and has a long and rich tradition at Leiden University. Its present members boast a high international profile and carry out fieldwork across the Near East. Several recent NWO and ERC funded projects have created an excellent research climate. Staff members are responsible for teaching Near Eastern Archaeology on all graduate and undergraduate levels. Recently a European Research Council Grant award for the project “ Consolidating Empire:Reconstructing Hegemonic Practices of the Middle Assyrian Empire at the Late Bronze Age Fortified Estate of Tell Sabi Abyad, Syria, ca. 1230 – 1180 BC” was awarded. The project focusses on the archaeological investigation of the early Assyrian Empire, using the Late Bronze Age data from Tell Sabi Abyad, Syria, and the prime case study.

To be considered for the UNCF/Merck Undergraduate Science Research Scholarship Awards, an applicant must be:

At least 15 Undergraduate Science Research Scholarship Awards will be made in 2012. Each award is up to a maximum of $30,000 that consists of a scholarship award of up to $25,000 and a summer research internship stipend of at least $5,000. For administrative purposes, the scholarship portion of the awards will be sent directly to the institutions of the award recipients. As the scholarship award is intended to support the award recipient’s tuition, room and board, and billable fees, no part of the award may be used for indirect costs. Awards are not transferable and may not be used at institutions abroad. Awards will be distributed for a September 1, 2012 start date.

The position is connected to the project “Offshore Mid-Norway: Integrated Margin and Basin Studies (OMNIS)” funded by the Research Council of Norway (NFR) under the PETROMAKS programme. OMNIS is an interdisciplinary strategic research project aimed at understanding fundamental geological processes that led to the formation of sedimentary basins and the continental margin offshore mid-Norway. The new knowledge will be used to reduce hydrocarbon exploration risk in the challenging Norwegian Sea province. The project involves integrated geological, geophysical, numerical and analogue model studies. The focus is on five work packages defined in the project, encompassing northeast Atlantic plate tectonics, basin processes, breakup magmatism, geodynamic modeling, and integration.

-You have a master degree, preferentially in chemistry or pharmaceutical Sciences
-You have a solid knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry and you are prepared to become an expert in medicinal chemistry

-You have excellent organizational and communication skills and you are prepared to work under strict timelines



Building further on our experience with covalent enzyme inhibitors, UAMC has initiated an innovative research program focussing on selective activity-based chemical probes to quantify and image enzyme activity. This technology has considerable potential in drug discovery and development, bioimaging, biomarker research and chemical biology.
-You will be responsible for synthesis of the chemical probes
-You will perform the analytical and biochemical evaluation of the probes
-You will write project reports for the steering committee on a regular basis
-You will be working within our international group of 15-20 researchers and you will collaborate with the proteomics partner of the project
-You will get in contact with more than 10 companies interested in this technology.

The competition is merit-based and open to those meeting the following criteria: resident of Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, or Tajikistan; holding an undergraduate degree (4- or 5-year) at the time of application deadline with an excellent academic record; proficient in spoken and written English at time of application; able to demonstrate professional aptitude and leadership potential insocial work; committed to returning to home country after completion of the program.



Scholarship Open for Students of Following Countries: Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, or Tajikistan

Social Work Fellowship Program allows chosen fellows to be placed at universities in the United States for a two-year graduate program in social work beginning in July 2012 and concluding in May 2014. Participating host universities are the School of Social Work at Columbia University and the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. Successful applicants from Jordan will attend Columbia University only.
