Postgraduate Research Studentship in Chemostratigraphy of Carbonate Petroleum Reservoir Analogues at the University of Greenwich, UK 2011

Eligibility:
-1st Class or Upper 2nd class Honours Bachelors Degree or Masters degree (UK or UK equivalent) in a relevant discipline
-For those whose first language is not English, a language proficiency score of at least IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 600 (internet equivalent 100) unless the degree above was taught in English and obtained in a majority English speaking country
-Previous experience of undertaking research
-This studentship will require Academic Technology Approval Scheme approval for the successful candidate if from outside of the EU/EEA

A funded PhD studentship is offered to investigate the application of elemental chemostratigraphy to carbonate petroleum reservoir analogues. The project will focus on limestone reef strata cropping out in the Canning Basin of Western Australia using material already collected by an industry?academia consortium. This PhD has an industrial partner (Chemostrat Ltd) and another company may join in the near future. The Canning Basin was selected because it contains world?class exposures of limestone reef complexes which are analogues of similar, sub?surface, reef complexes found around the world that are petroleum bearing but have a highly complex internal architecture. The principal aim of the Canning Basin project is to obtain field and laboratory data that can then be used to aid oil industry stratigraphic correlation, seismic interpretation, reservoir characterization and static geologic modelling. The student will prepare and analyse the samples, process and integrate the data with other data streams (e.g. palaeomag.) and develop a chemostratigraphic model for the facies of the Canning Basin. The student will also spend time at Chemostrat Ltd, based in Welshpool.
