Scholarship Provider: Georgetown University Law Center
Scholarship can be taken at: USA

Eligibility:
1. Must be a women’s human rights lawyer from Africa.
2. As a requirement of participation in the LAWA Program, all applicants must commit to return home to their own countries upon completion of the Fellowship, and to use their best professional efforts to advance women’s human rights in their counties throughout their careers.

Scholarship Open for International Students: Yes (Africa)

The Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa (LAWA) Fellowship Program was founded in 1993 at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., in order to train women’s human rights lawyers from Africa who are committed to returning home to their countries in order to advance the status of women and girls in their own countries throughout their careers. The entire LAWA Fellowship Program is approximately 14 months long (from July of the first year through August of the following year), after which the LAWA Fellows return home to continue advocating for women’s rights in their own countries. The LAWA Program starts in July, when the Fellows attend the Georgetown Law Center’s Foundations of American Law and Legal Education course. From August through May, the LAWA Fellows earn a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree at Georgetown with an emphasis on international women’s human rights and complete a major graduate paper on a significant women’s rights issue in their home countries. After graduation, the LAWA Fellows have an opportunity to engage in challenging work assignments for several months at various public interest organizations to learn about different advocacy strategies to advance women’s human rights, before returning home to continue advancing women’s human rights in their own countries. The LAWA Program helps defray the costs for candidates who would not otherwise be able to afford an LL.M. degree focusing on international women’s human rights and additional professional development training. The LAWA Fellowship provides the tuition for the Foundation of American Law and Legal Education course (a U.S. $2,200 benefit) and for the Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from the Georgetown University Law Center (a U.S. $42,065 benefit), as well as training provided by the LAWA Program.

PhD Scholarships in Theoretical Physics of Hybrid Quantum Systems, Macquarie University

Study Subject(s): Theoretical Physics of Hybrid Quantum Systems
Course Level: PhD
Scholarship Provider: the ARC Centre for Engineered Quantum Systems
Scholarship can be taken at: Australia

Immediately available are two PhD scholarships. In Australia a PhD is normally 3-4 years in duration and there is no coursework. The scholarships cover the national/international fees (International: 32,000$/yr), and provides an annual stipend of ~23,000$, with some support for relocation. The research will focus on the THEORETICAL PHYSICS of Hybrid Quantum Systems: ie. what can be done by connecting up different types of quantum systems: nanomechanical + single atoms/ion/spin qubits/diamond superconducting qubit + nanomechanical superconducting + atomic qubits/condensed matter qubits superconducting + optical qubits etc

This is a very exciting new research area in quantum science with researchers building new experiments to couple very different physical systems. The reason is that some systems have very particular advantages (superconducting systems interact very strongly), but these same systems have some weaknesses (superconducting qubits dont have very long coherence times). Researchers then aim to combine various types of quantum systems together to get the best of each to work together.

The position is part of a large national research effort : the ARC Centre for Engineered Quantum Systems, and these posts will entail travel to collaborate with the other project nodes in Sydney, Perth and Brisbane, as well as our international partners overseas. The posts should be taken up between March-July 2012. Once an application for a scholarship is lodged it may take ~2 months to learn the outcome and ~2-4 months for the VISA

To apply please email a CV, your academic transcripts at MSc, MPhil, BSc levels, copies of all thesis (irrespective of whether in english or not), and pdfs of all relevant publications or preprints. Label the Subject of your email as “PhD Application” to Professor Jason Twamley (jason.twamley-at-mq.edu.au)
