Scholarships and Fellowships for UK citizens

Canada

Canadian Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships (PDRF) for citizens of the United Kingdom for 2011.

As part of the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP), the Government of Canada invites up to 15 nominations for one-year post-doctoral research fellowships tenable at recognised public Canadian universities and affiliated research institutes only.

Eligibility

Applicants must be citizens of the United Kingdom. Anyone who has obtained Canadian citizenship or who has applied for permanent residency in Canada shall not be eligible for an award.
Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. degree within the last three years or have completed the Ph.D. degree requirements before taking up the award (evidence of submission of dissertation for defence provided by the responsible department head).
Fellowships are not offered to professional artists or to those wishing to do clinical research and training involving patient-care.
Applicants must be accepted into a post-doctoral position at a recognised public Canadian university or affiliated research institute of their choice.
Priority will be given to candidates who have not previously studied in Canada under a Canadian government scholarship.
Value

The total value of the fellowship is $36,500 CAD. The fellowship is taxable in Canada. As no dependant allowance is payable, it is essential that fellows who plan to bring their family to Canada have sufficient financial resources for their support.

Terms and Conditions

Fellowships must be of 12 months duration and are not renewable.
Fellowships must commence no later than 30 September 2011.
Applications

Please read the following guidelines very carefully before making an application. Please also read the following 'frequently asked questions' supplied by CBIE in answer to common queries about the Fellowships (received from CBIE 9 November 2010).

Applications must be made using the online application system which can be accessed along with details of the terms and conditions of the Fellowships at the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) Website. The closing date for completing the online application form is 15 November 2010.

Please note that in addition to completing the online form, all candidates must submit the following checklist along with all the supporting documents listed on it, to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK by the 25 November 2010 at the latest. If all supporting documentation is not received by that date, the application will not be considered.

You are required to include the Letter of Recommendation form with all references along with the other supporting documentation.

If you intend to apply for the Canadian Postdoctoral Research Fellowships, please register your intention by e-mailing csfpout@acu.ac.uk as in this way, we can provide you with updates should we receive any from CBIE.

Please note: the Canadian agency of the CSFP no longer offer scholarships to UK citizens for postgraduate study in Canada. The ACU does administer a scheme for the Canada Memorial Foundation, which offers funding to those who wish to undertake Masters level work in Canada. The closing date has now passed for this Scheme in 2009, but please see the website for future invitations to apply.

Singapore

Two Commonwealth Scholarships will be available at the National University of Singapore at its Graduate School of Integrative Sciences and Engineering (NGS). The two awards, for PhD study, are open to citizens of any Commonwealth country include a monthly stipend, full payment of fees and computer/book/conference allowance. Applicants should have at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree or equivalent.

The closing deadlines are 15 May and 15 September for the January intake of the following year, 15 November for the August intake of the following year, and 15 Mar for the August intake of the same year. Brunei Darussalam

Please note that Scholarships are currently being advertised for study in Brunei Darussalam. For more information on these please the CSFP Website. Please note that the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission has not been invited to nominate for these Scholarships but applications should be submitted directly to the Agency in Brunei Darussalam.

India

Please note that if/when the UK is asked to nominate candidates again in 2010, we will post updated information as soon as it is available (in early 2011).

As part of the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP), the Government of India is offering two postgraduate awards for scholarships to UK citizens wishing to study in India.

Eligibility

Applicants must be citizens of the United Kingdom.
Candidates must meet the eligibility requirements of the course and institution at which they intend to study.
Candidates may not study courses in medicine or dentistry.
Priority will be given to candidates who have not previously studied in India.

Applications should be on the official application form, together with certified copies of all requested supporting documentation (see Guidelines above). In the case of those applying for an MPhil or PhD, it is also necessary for an application for approval of research visa to be submitted.

Trinidad and Tobago

Please note that the closing date for applications in 2010 has now passed but information is maintained on this Website for candidates who might be interested in applying in the future. Please note that if/when the UK is asked to nominate candidates again in 2011, we will post information as soon as it is available (in Winter 2010).
As part of the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship plan, the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago invites up to two nominations for postgraduate level study in Trinidad and Tobago tenable at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus and the University of Trinidad and Tobago.

Eligibility

Applicants must be citizens of the United Kingdom
Applicants must possess a Bachelor’s degree with at least Lower Second Class Honours from a recognized University
These scholarships are available for study in the Faculty of Science and Agriculture, Social Sciences, Engineering, Humanities and Education, Institute of International Relations and Institute of Business. Awards in Medicine may also be available (details to follow).
The Agency in Trinidad and Tobago state that they will give preference to candidates who have graduated with a first degree or Master’s degree after August 1998.
