Postdoctoral Position in Cardiovascular Development in Zebrafish at MDC in Germany

Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine offers Postdoctoral Position in Cardiovascular Development in Zebrafish 2011

Study Subject:Cardiovascular Development in Zebrafish
Employer: Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine
Level: Postdoctoral

We are a newly starting team studying the interplay between major signaling pathways and electrochemical cues both during normal cardiac development and in the disease states. We utilize state-of-the-art techniques such as high resolution optical voltage mapping and calcium imaging to explore the role of electrochemical stimuli throughout development in the zebrafish. Our recent findings have demonstrated that Wnt11 signaling patterns intercellular electrical coupling of developing cardiomyocytes through effects on transmembrane calcium conductance mediated via the L-type calcium channel. Several exciting projects are available focusing on: (i) molecular mechanisms leading to the Wnt-mediated attenuation of L-type calcium channels, (ii) characterizing how non-canonical Wnt signals compartmentalize and affect different calcium domains in various tissues, and (iii) determining how electrochemical signals modulated by Wnt11 regulate cardiac morphogenesis and function.

Skills: The candidate should have obtained a PhD within a relevant research area (i.e. Molecular and Developmental Biology, Biochemistry, Physiology, or Biophysics). Previous experience in protein biochemistry or electrophysiology is an asset. We offer an excellent research environment expert in a range of techniques that we hope highly motivated individuals will apply both toward the described projects, and projects of their own development.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 30 June2011
