Eligibility: The candidate for this position holds a Ph.D. degree in the filed of environmental sciences. He/she is knowledgeable in freshwater lake sediments, geochemistry, early diagenetic processes, and takes interest in modeling. Good command of the English language and good writing skills are essential. Start can be early in 2011. Workplace is Eawag Kastanienbaum, near Lucerne.

The intended work will focus on the early diagenetic processes of the Fe/Mn layers in the sediments of Lake Baikal, Siberia. In a recent expedition we have sampled sediments and porewaters from several locations, which are currently analyzed. The resulting biogeochemical information shall help to characterize the controlling physical and biogeochemical processes occurring in the diagenesis of these sediment layers, and to describe their mineral composition. We are interested in the processes of creation, and conditions for immobilization and dissolution of these layers. With a detailed knowledge of sediment diagenetic processes the temporal dynamics and key parameters of Fe/Mn layers shall be validated using a dynamic sediment model.
