Near East Archaeology is part of the Faculty of Archaeology and has a long and rich tradition at Leiden University. Its present members boast a high international profile and carry out fieldwork across the Near East. Several recent NWO and ERC funded projects have created an excellent research climate. Staff members are responsible for teaching Near Eastern Archaeology on all graduate and undergraduate levels. Recently a European Research Council Grant award for the project “ Consolidating Empire:Reconstructing Hegemonic Practices of the Middle Assyrian Empire at the Late Bronze Age Fortified Estate of Tell Sabi Abyad, Syria, ca. 1230 – 1180 BC” was awarded. The project focusses on the archaeological investigation of the early Assyrian Empire, using the Late Bronze Age data from Tell Sabi Abyad, Syria, and the prime case study.

Doctorate Position in the field of Applied Sciences at Delft University of Technology, Netherlands
Study Subject(s): Automated Slide Scanning
Course Level: PhD
Scholarship Provider: Delft University of Technology
Scholarship can be taken at: Netherlands
Eligibility:
-We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic candidate with an MSc degree in (applied) physics or a related subject.
-He/she must have an excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and a top 20% ranking during his/her BSc and MSc. Experience in optical engineering and design is helpful.
-Good programming skills in MATLAB and Labview are a necessity.
Currently available whole slide scanners are 2D bright field scanners; envisioned follow-up scanners would broaden to 3D bright field imaging for improved autofocus operation and to 3D fluorescence imaging. Philips and the Quantitative Imaging group at TU Delft are starting a joint project to investigate and develop 3D imaging for digital pathology in the framework of the “Cyttron 2” research consortium. The project entails designing, building, and testing a lab setup for novel 3D and fluorescence slide scanning principles, as well as processing and analysing huge image data files. Guiding principles throughout the project will be translating application needs and practical boundary conditions into technical requirements and bringing inventive technology towards practical application.
