PhD Fellowship in Molecular Biology at University of Antwerp, Belgium
The research aims to build a mechanistic understanding of the regulation of leaf growth in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. In the experimental groups the work focuses on the growth regulator auxin and its interaction with the growth processes cell division and expansion. This work is supported by the development of computer simulation models in the mathematical groups, in which experimental treatments are simulated to make predictions that can be verified experimentally. The combination of experimental and computational expertise will lead to a greater depth of our understanding of the regulation of growth regulation in plants.
-You perform molecular and cell biological research towards obtaining a PhD on the topic of the regulation of cell expansion during the development of Arabidopsis leaves. The project is conducted within the experimental research group “Plant Growth and Development”.
-You participate in the teaching and research support within the department of Biology. This entails limited involvement in the practical courses and the guidance of BSc and MSc projects.

Study Subject(s): Basic Medical Sciences
Course Level: PhD
Scholarship Provider: Ghent University
Scholarship can be taken at: Belgium
Eligibility:
-Interested candidates should preferentially have a biological, biochemical or biomedical background (master degree) with grades.
-We look for a motivated and ambitious candidate with strong interests in fundamental pre-clinical studies.
-Interest in electrophysiological investigations is necessary.
-Genuine interest in the subject, research-driven motivation and dedication are necessary elements.
The project will be based on biophysical approaches including single channel recordings in isolated ventricular cardiomyocytes and action potential measurements in multicellular preparations as well as intact heart. A major part of the work will be devoted to characterizing the regulation (by cytoplasmic calcium and others) of cardiac connexin hemichannels and to explore the potential contribution of these channels as an arrthymogenic substrate. Significant efforts will be directed to distinguishing connexin hemichannel unitary currents in single cardiomyocytes from other classic ion channels (f.e. sodium, potassium and chloride channels). Phd Position in the Department of Molecular Biotechnology, Ghent University, Belgium
University of Ghent offers PhD position in the department of Molecular Biotechnology, Belgium
Study Subject: Molecular epidemiology of Chlamydopila (Chlamydia) psittaci infections in humans and development of a recombinant C. psittaci vaccine for chickens
Employer: Ghent University
Level: PhD
The research will be conducted in the Laboratory for Immunology and Animal Cell Biotechnology of Ghent University, Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, Coupure links, 653, 9000 Ghent, Belgium.
Research summary:
Human psittacosis (parrot fever) is a zoonotic infectious disease, which is caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium Chlamydophila (Chlamydia) psittaci. Transmission of the disease from birds to humans usually originates from close contact with infected birds, most frequently in the context of the poultry industry. The infection is highly prevalent in turkeys and ducks. But, recently we demonstrated that C. psittaci is also widely spread in the chickens. The purpose of the research is to examine the transmission of C. psittaci from infected chickens to humans (co-operation with Ghent University hospital). In addition, we are going to develop a recombinant C. psittaci vaccine for chickens, as vaccination chickens would also reduce the risk of zoonotic C. psittaci transmission to humans.
Profile-Degree: Master in Microbiology, Master in Animals Sciences, Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Master in Biosciences, Master in Biotechnology, Master in Molecular Biotechnology, Master in Immunology, Master in Agricultural Sciences.

Scholarship for Phd applicants in the field of Biomedical Engineering, Belgium
The bioMMeda (biofluid, tissue and solid mechanics for medical applications) research unit of Ghent University’s Institute Biomedical Technology (IBiTech) has a vacant PhD-position in the field of ultrasonic imaging development for improved arterial tissue characterization. Non-invasive measurement of arterial stiffness is nowadays considered as an important part of cardiovascular risk assessment. Ultrasound is potentially useful for this application but unfortunately still shows limitations regarding resolution and sensitivity. The aim of the PhD-project therefore is to improve current ultrasonic image formation and signal processing to develop a robust ultrasonic estimator of arterial stiffness. As such, knowledge on signal processing, ultrasound physics/acoustics is considered an advantage.
Applicants have a masters degree in engineering, with specialization in electrical engineering, applied physics, biomedical or mechanical engineering.
Knowledge on signal processing, ultrasound physics/acoustics is considered an advantage.
Candidates will work in our young, enthusiastic team of biomedical engineers, and contribute to our multidisciplinary projects. All positions are in principle for 4 years (2×2 years) and should lead to a PhD inBiomedical Engineering. The net salary is approximately 1700 euro/month.
Scholarship Application Deadline: 2 August 2011
