Scholarship Provider: Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden
Scholarship can be taken at: Sweden
Eligibility:
The applicant must hold an exam in Chemistry, Environmental Science or other related discipline, have a collaborative attitude and be open for new challenges and field work in demanding environments e.g on board research vessels and at polar and marine stations. The undergraduates are normally taught in Swedish, although the graduate level teaching is in English. Thus good language skills are required. The department for Chemical and biological engineering promote research and education for sustainable development, for improved health and quality of life. Our research ranges from naturalscience and bioscience, applied chemistry and biotechnology to chemical engineering. Our educational programs are characterized by technological solutions for improving people’s everyday life, and are continuously developed for meeting and promoting societal and industrial development. We have approximately 350 employees, divided into five research divisions and one administrative unit. We are situated at campus Johanneberg. Our department is characterized by stimulation of world leading research, in an environment where people develop and create new knowledge. We look for a PhD candidate to work with a team of international leading experts in the project: Global Mercury Observation System, GMOS. The project is a part of the 7th EU framework program co-funded by European commission and Chalmers University of Technology. Mercury is a recognized global pollutant and it’s cycling between different environmental compartments depends on the dynamic of chemical and physical processes (oxidation, reduction, methylation, dry and wet deposition and evasion from surfaces). The overall goal of the GMOS project is to develop a coordinated global observation system for mercury and to provide temporal and spatial distributions of mercury concentrations in ambient air and precipitation over land and sea surface at different altitudes and latitudes around the world. The successful applicant will have the possibility to participate in oceanographic and land based measurement campaigns at polar, tropical and temperate sites.

Course Level: PhD
Scholarship Provider: Chalmers University
Scholarship can be taken at: Sweden
Eligibility:
-We are looking for a creative person with an excellent Bachelors or Masters degree, and a keen interest in functional programming.
-You should have carried out significant projects in a functional language, perhaps as a Bachelors or Masters thesis.
-We would like to see some concrete evidence of your activities in functional programming.
-For that, you could send us a published paper of your work, which constitutes a considerable merit, an extended abstract, a technical report, or a copy of your bachelors or masters thesis.
Functional programming is enjoying an unprecedented surge of interest, with languages such as Erlang, Scala and Haskell seeing high-profile applications in companies large and small. A major reason is the much improved productivity that software developers can enjoy, by adoptingfunctional programming. With intense competition from emerging economies, productivity improvements are vital if the West is to retain its software industry. We have secured a large, five-year strategic research grant to bring these benefits to two new areas: signal processing and low-level control in the system layer of products such as radio base stations for mobile broadband, and real-time automotive software built around the AUTOSAR standard. Our approach is to combine domain-specific languages embedded in Haskell or Erlang with rapid verification based on property-based testing (QuickCheck) and automated proof tools. Our work is carried out in close cooperation with industry, and has the potential to make a real impact in key industrial sectors.

PhD Studentship in Railway Mechanics at Chalmers University, Sweden
2011 Doctorate Studentship in the Department of Applied Mechanics at Chalmers University in Sweden
Study Subject(s): Railway Mechanics
Course Level: PhD
Scholarship Provider: Chalmers University
Scholarship can be taken at: Sweden
Eligibility: A suitable background is a Master of Science (Swedish: civilingenjör) in mechanical engineering, engineering physics or civil engineering with emphasis on computational mechanics and structural dynamics. A strong interest in modelling, simulation and experimental validation of models is required. Knowledge of the Swedish language is desirable but not a requirement. However, all PhD Students are expected to be able to teach in Swedish as well as in English after two years of employment. Those who do not have Swedish as their mother tongue are offered courses in the Swedish language.
The Division of Dynamics at the Department of Applied Mechanics is seeking a new PhD student to start in the autumn of 2011.The project will generate increased knowledge to support product development of track switches (turnouts) with a more stable geometry and a better balanced elasticity. The aim is to reach reduced track geometry degradation by implementation of an optimised design of sleepers and resilient elements. Based on simulation, a critical assessment of different materials in rail crossings subjected to mixed traffic conditions will be performed. A numerical model for prediction of settlement in track switches will be developed. Available numerical models of dynamic interaction between vehicle and switch, and finite element calculations of strains and stresses in relevant switch components, will be used.

Postdoctoral Fellowships in Translational Neuroscience of Drug Abuse, Center for Addictive Behaviors, Sweden
Postdoctoral Fellowships Positions in Translational Neuroscience of Drug Abuse at Center for Addictive Behaviors, Stockholm University, Sweden
UCLA Translational Neuroscience of Drug Abuse (TNDA) Program set forth to link several successful UCLA research centers by establishing a unified training program. Each spring applications are accepted for both pre and postdoctoral fellowships (12-month, renewable appointments).
The program is funded by a NIDA T32 Training Grant and provides trainees with the integrative knowledge base needed to conduct bidirectional translational studies including cutting-edge technical laboratory methods, computational approaches in data evaluation, and issues related to ethical treatment of human subjects. TNDA trainees will have a research project in a specific mentor’s laboratory, but will gain exposure to other areas of drug abuse research through laboratory rotations, common core training elements as well as by formal and informal interaction among key faculty and TNDA leadership. Successful researchers must also become adept at identifying sources of research funding and at preparing fundable applications that can further their independent investigation. TNDA trainees will receive didactic training and mentoring in these important areas, with emphasis on skills in scientific writing and presentation to enhance dissemination of research findings.

CHF 1920.- for fine arts and music students
CHF 1600.- for students attending language courses in Fribourg or Lugano
The Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students does not cover the cost of academic and /or term fees. Generally-speaking, the universities and the Zurich Federal Institute of Technology exempt holders of Swiss government scholarships from term fees, but not necessarily from Masters programme enrolment fees. In the event that these fees are not waived, it is up to the scholarship holder to arrange payment.
4. Application procedure
1. If you fulfil the eligibility requirements contact the Swiss diplomatic representation in your country of origin.
2. The diplomatic representation will provide you with all the necessary information regarding the procedure including application forms and a list of required documentation.
5. Awards
Technically, the scholarships are offered to the government of the student’s country of origin and not to the student. Applications are subject to preliminary selection by the relevant national authorities and the Swiss diplomatic representation. The Swiss diplomatic representation then passes on the selected applications to the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS) which subsequently takes the final decision. The FCS is composed of academic staff drawn from Swiss universities. Scholarship awards are made on the basis of academic and scientific excellence.
