Research Position in RF Systems and Accelerator Physics in Department of Physics at Uppsala University, Sweden 2012

Study Subject(s): RF systems and Accelerator Physics
Course Level: Research
Scholarship Provider: Uppsala University
Scholarship can be taken at: Sweden

Eligibility:
PhD in physics, electronics or microwave technology or equivalent work experience in a relevant topic. We are looking for qualified and motivated candidates with a strong interest in experimental methods and skills to build scientific instruments. Previous experience in microwave or accelerator physics is an advantage. Good oral and written proficiency in English are desirable as well as the capacity to work both independently and in a team and willingness to travel.

The project studies the fundamental limits of future accelerators which are their microwave structures and radio frequency (RF) distribution systems as well as the effects of electro-magnetic fields on particle beams. Studies of radio frequency (RF) distribution systems include active and passive high-power microwave components required for the RF system development and is focused on reducing energy consumption. To this purpose, the project will construct a 1.5 MW – 704 MHz RF test stand at the Ångström Laboratory for the development of RF-distribution systems and prepare a Technical Design Report for the RF distribution system to the ESS (before end 2012). The origin of RF discharges and the impact of electro-magnetic fields on the particle beam are studied to determine tolerances and limits for accelerators. The project will construct diagnostic systems to study the origin of RF discharges and the effect of electro-magnetic fields on the particle beam. The researcher will participate in the running of the experiments, collection and analysis of data. The work will be carried out in collaboration with institutes in Sweden and abroad.

Chalmers University of Technology offers Doctoral Position in STM/nanoplasmonics, Sweden

Study Subject(s): STM/nanoplasmonics
Course Level: PhD
Scholarship Provider: Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden
Scholarship can be taken at: Sweden

Eligibility:
University degree (MSc) in engineering physics, materials science, photonics or related areas. Strong interest in experimental nanomaterials research and excellent command of English are prerequisites.

Division of Bionanophotonics operates at the crossroads between optics and nanobioscience – our projects target nanoplasmonic biosensors, quantitative fluorescence microscopy, nanoscale optical forces, functional metamaterials, and much more. Although many of our projects are based in advanced optical spectroscopy andmicroscopy , we also do a fair amount of electromagnetics theory, nanofabrication and biophysics. Graduate students and postdocs are recruited internationally and have diverse backgrounds ranging from theoretical physics to molecular biology. We have particular focus on low-dimensional nanostructures that support localized surface plasmon resonances in the wide range of frequencies (from UV to IR) to use them in the studies of fundamental nanophotonics and in a broad range of applications. We like self-assembly-based nanofabrication and apply bottom-up nanofabrication methods to make impact in (bio)sensing, optical metamaterials, magnetoplasmonics, enhancement of various weak processes and many others.

The Department of Information Technology, Centre for Image Analysis offers PhD Student in Computerised Image Analysis with focus on Medical Visualization at Uppsala University, Sweden

Study Subject(s): Computerized Image Analysis with focus on Medical Visualization
Course Level: PhD
Scholarship Provider: Uppsala University, Sweden
Scholarship can be taken at: Sweden

Eligibility:
The candidate should have a Master of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent, including mathematics and statistics. Experience of digital image analysis, computer graphics, and scientific visualization is desirable, as is experience of system development.

This position will be within the research program Image Analysis and Man-machine Interaction at the Centre for Image Analysis at the Department of Information Technology. The topic of the project involves segmentation and registration in medical volume images, namely CT images of the skull, with the aim to develop a system for cranio-maxillofacial surgery planning. In a current project at CBA, we have shows that in interaction with 3D objects, the sense of touch is an essential addition to our visual perception. Haptic devices can be used to facilitate interaction with 3D virtual objects. Pointing in 3D and grabbing, moving and turning objects is much more natural with a 6 degrees-of-freedom probe than using more conventional 2D interaction devices such as a mouse. The success of this project will come by developing and combining stereographic visualization, volume rendering, haptic rendering, as well as interactive segmentation andregistration algorithms.
