Postgraduate Research Studentship in Chemical and Physical Enhancement of Carbonation of Waste Materials at the University of Greenwich, UK

Eligibility:
-1st Class or Upper 2nd class Honours Bachelors Degree or Masters degree (UK or UK equivalent) in a relevant discipline
-Previous experience of undertaking research
-For those whose first language is not English, a language proficiency score of at least IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 600 (internet equivalent 100) unless the degree above was taught in English and obtained in a majority English speaking country
-Understands the fundamental differences between a taught degree degree in terms of approach and personal discipline/motivation
-Able to, under guidance, complete independent work successfully

This project is concerned with the reaction of mineral systems with CO2 as a means of sequestrating anthropogenic emissions of carbon. In the context of waste technology, the accelerated carbonation of thermal (and other) residues is a viable means to divert hazardous waste from landfill through the production of engineering materials. However the carbonation reaction (at normal temperatures and pressures) is limited by kinetic constraints linked to the diffusion and ionisation of CO2 in aqueous media. The unique approach adopted by our group involves low water/solid (w/s) systems at STP, and the commercial potential of this approach for the treatment of waste is being realised. However, for the future development and wider application of carbonation in a ‘low’ technology, low cost approach, there is a need to investigate ways of improving the efficiency of the carbonation of waste.

Postgraduate Research Studentship in Chemostratigraphy of Carbonate Petroleum Reservoir Analogues at the University of Greenwich, UK 2011

Eligibility:
-1st Class or Upper 2nd class Honours Bachelors Degree or Masters degree (UK or UK equivalent) in a relevant discipline
-For those whose first language is not English, a language proficiency score of at least IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 600 (internet equivalent 100) unless the degree above was taught in English and obtained in a majority English speaking country
-Previous experience of undertaking research
-This studentship will require Academic Technology Approval Scheme approval for the successful candidate if from outside of the EU/EEA

A funded PhD studentship is offered to investigate the application of elemental chemostratigraphy to carbonate petroleum reservoir analogues. The project will focus on limestone reef strata cropping out in the Canning Basin of Western Australia using material already collected by an industry?academia consortium. This PhD has an industrial partner (Chemostrat Ltd) and another company may join in the near future. The Canning Basin was selected because it contains world?class exposures of limestone reef complexes which are analogues of similar, sub?surface, reef complexes found around the world that are petroleum bearing but have a highly complex internal architecture. The principal aim of the Canning Basin project is to obtain field and laboratory data that can then be used to aid oil industry stratigraphic correlation, seismic interpretation, reservoir characterization and static geologic modelling. The student will prepare and analyse the samples, process and integrate the data with other data streams (e.g. palaeomag.) and develop a chemostratigraphic model for the facies of the Canning Basin. The student will also spend time at Chemostrat Ltd, based in Welshpool.

The project forms part of the carbon capture research activity carried out at IMP by Dr Ferrari. Membrane processes are one of the options currently being investigated for carbon capture from flue gases and for hydrogen purification and CO2 separation. To improve the performance of these processes it is necessary to develop novel materials, which require higher selectivity and permeability. You will responsible for the experimental measurement of permeability of pure and mixed gas in novel polymer and composite materials. You will analyse the data with different model in order to describe the mass transport in the system. You will develop experiments for the test of the materials in presence of water and impurities.
