PhD Position in Scientific Computing at the Department of Information Technology, Uppsala University, Sweden 2011

Study Subject(s): Scientific Computing
Course Level: PhD
Scholarship Provider: Uppsala University
Scholarship can be taken at: Sweden

Candidates should have a Master of Science in Scientific Computing, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent. Experience in software development, parallel programming, programming GPUs, and performance evaluation is important.

Inside living cells, biochemical processes are often described with inherent randomness in order to account for a noisy microscopic environment. A common approach for simulating such models is to perform updates to some state-variable whenever certain events happen. These typically include reaction events and molecular movements. The holder of the position will be involved with advancing methods for efficient simulation of event-based models on modern multicore architectures. This includes, but are not limited to, aspects of high-performance computing, a certain amount of software flexibility, and numerically approximate algorithms.

Doctoral student in Water and Environmental Studies at the Department of Thematic Studies in Linköpings University, Sweden 2011
Study Subject(s): Water and Environmental Studies
Course Level: Doctoral
Scholarship Provider: Linköpings University
Scholarship can be taken at: Sweden
To be qualified for doctoral studies at Water and Environmental Studies applicants should have a Master of Science degree or equivalent in an area relevant to the research project such as environmental science, chemistry, biology, and earth sciences. Excellent use of the English language is required.
PhD project is a part of a larger project with the aim to study landscape scale greenhouse gas (GHG) balances accounting for all landscape compartments. An important question is to what extent GHG emissions from aquatic environments can counteract the net carbon dioxide uptake by the surrounding terrestrial environment. This particular PhD project will be a key component in the larger project by focusing specifically on the transport of carbon and GHGs to and from lakes and running water in the study area. The research will be performed in close collaboration with groups at five additional Swedish universities providing an extensive network. The work requires an interest for transport and transformation of compounds in nature and includes extensive periods of field work. Therefore a drivers licence and possibilities of longer stays at the field site near Uddevalla in South Western Sweden in necessary. Experiences of aquatic research, biogeochemical fluxes, analyses of carbon compounds and GHGs, automated analysis and sampling equipment and of scientific writing is beneficial in the evaluation. The successful candidate will pursue PhD-training, including a final doctoral thesis project. As employee the doctoral student will first and foremost focus on the research training tasks at hand.

PhD Studentship in the Department of Physics at Lund University, Sweden

A formal requirement for doctoral studies in physics is an advanced university degree within a related field, such as a Master’s degree in physics or nanotechnology or equivalent, or substantial advanced course work at the master level or comparable, including an independent research project.
-Furthermore, the acceptance is based on the estimated ability to accomplish your postgraduate studies.

The project should lead to control over heterostructure formation and doping in different temperature growth regimes designed to favor epitaxial axial or radial growth. The project will be carried out partly in a clean room environment and will include characterization and processing of the structures, using for instance microscopy, electron beam lithography, metal evaporation, and contacting in order to evaluate the electro optical properties of the materials. The PhD will work in close cooperation with other research groups at the department and within the nanometerconsortium. The PhD studies contain a course part and a scientific project. Teaching on undergraduate level is typically also part of the job.
