PhD Research Position in in Geology/Geophysics at the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo in Norway 2011



Eligibility:
-Applicants must hold a masters degree in geology/geophysics or a related field.
-The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.
-The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
-Firstly, the applicants must have obtained undergraduate (Cand.mag., i.e. B.Sc. level) and postgraduate (Cand.Scient., M.Sc., or Siv.ing., i.e. M.Sc. level) qualifications. This represents approximately five years of full time studies after completion of European Upper Secondary School/International Baccalaureate.


The position is connected to the project “Offshore Mid-Norway: Integrated Margin and Basin Studies (OMNIS)” funded by the Research Council of Norway (NFR) under the PETROMAKS programme. OMNIS is an interdisciplinary strategic research project aimed at understanding fundamental geological processes that led to the formation of sedimentary basins and the continental margin offshore mid-Norway. The new knowledge will be used to reduce hydrocarbon exploration risk in the challenging Norwegian Sea province. The project involves integrated geological, geophysical, numerical and analogue model studies. The focus is on five work packages defined in the project, encompassing northeast Atlantic plate tectonics, basin processes, breakup magmatism, geodynamic modeling, and integration.

Researchers are expected to participate in the international scientific arena through publication of scientific articles and attend conferences. The applicant should demonstrate the ability to work independently, as well as integrated within a multidisciplinary team and be motivated to exchange ideas and results with colleagues. Experience with modern processing and modelling software is important. A good knowledge and understanding of English is required. Since this is a position with much field work, the candidate should like to work outside in all kind of weather conditions.
NGU seeks a candidate with Master’s or PhD degree or equivalent in geophysics, who has experience in data acquisition, processing and interpretation. The position is within the team “Bedrock excavations and applied geophysics” and the work will be data acquisition, processing and interpretation. Primary methods will be resistivity, ground penetrating radar and seismic but may include other methods. These methods will be used for tunnel, landslides and environmental problems and groundwater and mineral exploration as well as general geological mapping. The work is performed in a team-working environment.

-Applicants must have achieved a PhD in a relevant field such as aquatic biology, aquatic ecology, molecular biology or microbiology.
- The candidate must have presented the dissertation for assessment by the closing date for applications.
-It is a prerequisite that the dissertation has been approved before appointment is granted.
-General use of molecular biological techniques (PCR, qPCR, sequencing, cloning etc.) is a prerequisite.
-It is beneficial that the candidate has experience in zooplankton biology, publications in the field of zooplankton trophic interactions, and/or general knowledge in marine biology, ecology, molecular ecology or ecological modelling.

A three-year post doctoral position in molecular marine zooplankton biology/ecology is available at Uni Environment starting no later than December 2011. The position is part of the project «A novel cross-disciplinary approach to solve an old enigma: the food-web transfer of the mass-blooming phytoplankter Phaeocystis», coordinated by research scientist Aud Larsen. The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway, and runs from 2011 to 2014. The post doctoral researcher will be affiliated to the research group Molecular Ecology at Uni Environment, but the work will be performed in close collaboration with the other project partners.

•A master degree or equivalent in Special Needs Education or a related master degree in social sciences or humanistic orientation. It is required good skills in scientific methodolgy. Applicants must document the requirements for admission to the PhD program.
