2 Postdoctoral researchers in International Law Through the Prism of National Courts at University of Amsterdam, Netherlands

Study Subject(s): International Law Through the Prism of National Courts
Course Level: Postdoctoral research
Scholarship Provider: University of Amsterdam, Netherlands
Scholarship can be taken at: Netherlands

Eligibility:
- a PhD in public international law
-excellent writing skills, fluency in English ‘New Checks and Balances at the Interface(s) between International and National Law’

Scholarship Open for International Students: Yes

The Postdoctoral Researcher will carry out research within the project on International Law Through the Prism of National Courts, funded under the ECRP scheme of the European Science Foundation. He or she will be based at the Amsterdam Center for International Law (ACIL), which collaborates in this project with the Universities of Berlin, Oslo, Vienna, Warsaw, Siena, and Tel Aviv. The project will explore the legal status and effects of decisions of national courts in the international legal order. The increasing reliance of the international legal order on national courts and the growing practice of national courts in applyinginternational law raise the question whether the traditional principle that decisions of domestic courts are merely facts, still accurately captures the legal role and relevance of national court decisions in the international legal order. Among other things, the project intends to map and study the ways in which decisions of national courts influence the development ofinternational law, the conditions under which they may or may not be considered as authoritative (such as impartiality), how the international legal order deals with the diversity of interpretations between national courts, the effects when national courts review or resist decisions of international courts and international organizations, and the implications for legal theory and doctrine.

YSTW-funded Postdoctoral Research in Ultra-Sensitive Confocal Microscopy at the LCAM facility at the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences, Netherlands

Study Subject(s): Ultra-Sensitive Confocal Microscopy
Course Level: Postdoctoral Research
Scholarship Provider: University of Amsterdam, Netherlands
Scholarship can be taken at: Netherlands

Eligibility:
The researcher is an experienced engineer or physicist with technical expertise in the field of microscopy hardware (optics, electronics, software). The candidate has a strong affection with biological research and has the ability to work in a team and also independently.

Confocal microscopy is a technology that makes 3D images of fluorescently labeled biological objects. Since the first development of the confocal microscope in the early 80s the detection efficiency has been improved substantially by using more sensitive detectors, better optical design and improvements of the acquisition electronics. It is the aim of this project to further improve the sensitivity of the microscope. To do that we will exploit the novel technology Controlled Light Exposure Microscopy (CLEM), invented and developed by Prof. E. Manders and Dr R. Hoebe. CLEM has been designed for reduction of photodamage in fluorescence live-cellmicroscopy. It is our aim to improve sensitivity by a factor of 50 to 100.

Scholarship can be taken at: Netherlands

Eligibility:

-We welcome applications from candidates with a Master degree and an excellent academic record in polymer science (physics and chemistry).
-Strong experimental skills are required or need to be developed, both in polymer processing (extrusion, molding, spinning) and in material characterization (microscopy, x-ray analysis, rheology, thermo-mechanical testing).
-The candidate has to show capability of independent planning and performing of the research activities, initiative and affinity for team work.

One PhD position is available in Polymer Technology Group, within the Bio-based Polymers cluster. The position is within the STW project 11604 “Production of Poly(hydroxyalkanoates) (PHAs) from waste, part 2: product utilization and life cycle assessment”. The project is a consortium of 4 academic groups and 4 industrial partners. The task of the PhD student at TU/e will be to explore the possibilities to utilize the specially produced PHA as plastic material, also in blends with other bio-based polymers. The study will involve extensive characterization, processing, structure modification and testing of the properties of the waste-PHA, in comparison with standard PHAs.
