The Open Society Institute supports one-year master's scholarships in the social sciences and humanities, as well as PhD studies, at various graduate institutions in the United Kingdom. Fields of study include social anthropology, conflict resolution, economics, education, democracy studies, gender studies, human rights, and international relations for students and scholars from select non-EU countries in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Mongolia, and the former Soviet Union.
The programs provide approximately 40 long-term research grants and more than 140 degree awards.
Master's-Level Scholarships
Co-funding for master's-level study is provided by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), Cambridge Commonwealth Trust, Cambridge Overseas Trust, University College London, University of Essex, University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, University of Leeds, University of Manchester, University of Nottingham, University of Oxford Royal Holloway, University of St. Andrews, University of Sussex, Staffordshire University, University of York, and the University of Warwick.
An additional 90 short-term (mainly one-month) research awards are available in all fields at Oxford and Cambridge for qualified faculty from specific countries in the region.
PhD-Level Scholarships
In conjunction with the Universities of Cambridge and Staffordshire, OSI also offers PhD-level scholarships in Environmental Studies, Public Health, Education and Law at Cambridge for scholars from the Middle East, with scholars from the Balkans eligible for an MPhil/Economics at Staffordshire.
