Plant associated bacteria can harboour numerous genetic traits that allow them to interact with plants and influence plant growth. Two of the most important plant growth promoting traits are stress phytohormone (ethylene) reduction and phosphate solubilisation. It is estimated that less than 1% of viable soil bacteria are culturable and therefore the non-culturable majority are likely to maintain a potentially novel array of plant growth promotion traits. The aim of this project is to identify and subclone functional amino-1-cyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminases, responsible for ethylene reduction and phosphate solubilisation genes from a metagenomic library and from the rhizospheric strain Pseudomonas fluorescens F113. The project will result in the construction of specific genetic modules (miniTN5 based) that encode these plant growth promotion traits and allow insertion of the traits into desirable plant associated bacterial strains. It is envisaged that the traits and allow insertion of the traits into enhancement of the strains plant growth promotion ability and will allow the plant to be more efficient in phytoremediation of toxic xenobiotics harbour numerous genetic traits that allow and also act as biofertilisers.
