PhD studentship in Use of gaseous ozone to prevent microbial post-harvest spoilage and reduce pesticide residue levels at Newcastle University, UK
Study Subject(s) : Use of gaseous ozone to prevent microbial post-harvest spoilage and reduce pesticide residue levels
Course Level: PhD
Scholarship Provider: Horticultural Development Council
Scholarship can be taken at: UK
Eligibility:
You are required to have a good 2i degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
You should have some relevant research experience (e.g. from an undergraduate research project), be willing to travel and work away from Newcastle.
This three-year PhD will examine the potential use of ozone gas exposure to reduce microbial populations and spoilage of a variety of fresh produce types (mainly lettuce, herbs, carrots). The first stages of the project will involve optimisation of ozone exposure regimes that reduce microbial populations and spoilage but that do not affect produce quality. This will involve a combination of plant biology, microbiology and biochemistry.
Some work will also examine the potential of ozone to reduce pesticide residues on produce. The later project stages will involve close collaboration with industry and involve potential pilot scale application of ozone gas exposure technology in an industrial setting. This will require some work away from Newcastle with industrial partners.
