PhD Studentship in Computerised Image Analysis with Focus on Quantitative Microscopy, Uppsala University, Sweden

The Department of Information Technology has a leading position in research as well as teaching at all levels. The Department has about 200 employees, including 80 senior faculty and 80 PhD students. More than 3000 students are enrolled in one or more courses annually. More info: www.it.uu.se

The Center for Image Analysis has a long tradition of interdisciplinary research and graduate education in computerized image analysis and scientific visualization. Focus is on image processing as such, but also on developing better methods, algorithms and systems for applications within primarily biomedicine and forestry. More info: www.cb.uu.se

The Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) aims to explain the molecular basis for human complex disease by applying novel technologies to well characterized biomedical samples with the mission to identify genetic risk factors, biomarkers, and molecular mechanisms in human diseases. SciLifeLab in Uppsala builds on and extends existing research strengths in Uppsala, where molecular bioscience has long been in focus. Visualization of proteins, cells, tissues, and model-system phenotypes is absolutely essential in life science, and the Uppsala BioVis platform provides state-of-the-art equipment which, combined with technological and biological expertise, offers preconditions for world-leading research. Description of the subject area:
This PhD position will be part of a cross-disciplinary program effort within SciLifeLab with focus on image analysis and quantitative microscopy. Together with senior researchers the candidate will explore new challenges in high-content/high-throughput image analysis and develop innovative solutions in the field. Typical challenges are developing robust and efficient methods for image segmentation and quantification of biological signals.

Qualifications required:
The candidate should have a Master of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Molecular Biotechnology, or equivalent, in a field which is relevant for the work. It counts as a merit to have a good background in digital image processing as well as biotechnology/biomedicine. Research experience and high grades are considered as an advantage. The position is for a maximum of five years and includes departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching). You will be expected to teach in Swedish or English. Excellent skills in spoken and written English are an absolute requirement. As this position involves close collaboration with scientists from the biomedical field, a background and strong interest in biology and medicine is highly valued.

Application Deadline : 05 September 2011
