Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application:

Four Postdoctoral Positions in Physics with specialization in RF systems and accelerator physics

at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Division of High-Energy Physics, Accelerator Physics group. The position is for a period of two years. Starting date September, 1 or as agreed upon, preferably as soon as possible.

The accelerator physics group performs research towards future particle accelerators with special interest in the impact of electro-magnetic fields on particle beams and the high power radio frequency (RF) systems required to power the accelerating structures. The group is collaborating since many years in the CLIC project for which the university has built in Two-Beam Test Stand in CTF3 at CERN in Geneva. The group participates also in FEL projects for which the University has built an optical replica synthesizer (ORS) at FLASH and will build a “laser heater” for XFEL, both at DESY in Hamburg. The group has recently started a collaboration with the European Spallation Source (ESS) in which the university will build a superconducting RF test facility in Uppsala.

Functions: Research focused on particle accelerators’ RF system and interaction between the particle beam and electro-magnetic fields and supervision of doctoral students.

Project description: The project studies the fundamental limits of future accelerators which are their microwave structures and radio frequency (RF) distribution systems as well as the effects of electro-magnetic fields on particle beams. Studies of radio frequency (RF) distribution systems include active and passive high-power microwave components required for the RF system development and is focused on reducing energy consumption. To this purpose, the project will construct a 1.5 MW – 704 MHz RF test stand at the Ångström Laboratory for the development of RF-distribution systems and prepare a Technical Design Report for the RF distribution system to the ESS (before end 2012). The origin of RF discharges and the impact of electro-magnetic fields on the particle beam are studied to determine tolerances and limits for accelerators. The project will construct diagnostic systems to study the origin of RF discharges and the effect of electro-magnetic fields on the particle beam. The researcher will participate in the running of the experiments, collection and analysis of data. The work will be carried out in collaboration with institutes in Sweden and abroad.

Qualifications required: PhD in physics, electronics or microwave technology. For appointment as Post Doctor it is required that the candidate has completed a doctoral degree no longer than three years before the application deadline. We are looking for qualified and motivated candidates with a strong interest in experimental methods and skills to build scientific instruments. Previous experience in microwave or accelerator physics is an advantage. Good oral and written proficiency in English are desirable as well as the capacity to work both independently and in a team and willingness to travel.

Uppsala University is striving to achieve a more even gender balance in its research and teaching staff and women are especially invited to apply for this position.

Salary will be set according to the successful applicant’s qualifications.

Applications should include a brief description of research interests and relevant experience, CV, copies of certificates and diplomas, doctoral thesis (or a draft thereof), list of publications and other documents which the applicant wishes to claim. We prefer that you provide names and contact details of referees or attach recommendation letters.
