The Ph.D. project concerns the economic costs of travel time variability. A large share of road congestion delays in large urban areas is due to non-recurring events, causing travel times to become random and unpredictable from the travelers perspective. Understanding and measuring the costs of travel time variability is important for transport policy. The topic of this Ph.D. project is the valuation of travel time variability. In general, this valuation can be achieved through measurement of traveler preferences concerning trade-offs involving travel time variability, which can be carried out in choice experiments.
